SUMMARY:Tarpon Springs Public Library: Taxation, Tyranny and Treason - The Road to The Declaration of Independence
LOCATION:138 E. Lemon St., Tarpon Springs, FL 34689
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:This dynamic lecture traces the turbulent decade that transformed colonial
protest into outright rebellion. Britain’s victory in the French and Indian
War reshaped its empire—and saddled Parliament with staggering debt. In re
sponse, long-ignored colonies suddenly found themselves targeted by new tax
es and strict trade controls. The Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and Townshend Dutie
s ignited resistance, while the rallying cry of “no taxation without repres
entation” echoed from taverns to town greens.

Tensions soon turn
ed deadly. The Boston Massacre shocked the empire. The Boston Tea Party dar
ed Parliament to respond—and Britain answered with the punitive Coercive Ac
ts. Instead of submission, the colonies united, convening the First Contine
ntal Congress and, before long, exchanging gunfire at Lexington and Concord
.

From there, the lecture follows the rise of the Second Contine
ntal Congress, the appointment of George Washington, the radical influence
of Common Sense, and Thomas Jefferson’s crafting of a declaration that chal
lenged monarchy itself.

Rich with visuals and gripping storytell
ing, this presentation reveals how outrage became ideology—and protest beca
me independence.

Christopher Daley has been speaking all over Ne
