Lighthouse of Pinellas
The Lighthouse of Pinellas (LHP) is a place where individuals who have experienced vision loss can go to re-claim hope, independence and quality of life. Serving Pinellas County, Florida for the past 62 years, our non-profit organization is a vital resource for people of all ages from birth to over 90 years old.
Our professional staff are experts in the field of blindness and visual impairments, and most have Masters Degrees and national certifications in their areas of specialty. For the past 20 years, LHP has been accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Blind and Low Vision Services (NAC). Training is provided at no cost, and is funded in part by the Florida Division of Blind Services and support from the community. Occupational Therapy requires Medicare or private insurance.
Lighthouse of Pinellas Programs & Services
Independent Living Skills Classes — Learn adaptations for cooking, cleaning, money management, home organization, personal care and other daily tasks.
Orientation & Mobility Training — Discover new techniques for traveling independently and safely, problem solving and accessing public transportation.
Adaptive Computer Training — Our specialized training teaches keyboarding, Windows operating system, word processing, e-mail and Internet using magnifying or screen-reading software.
Counseling—Individuals and family members discuss the emotional and physical impact of vision loss, coping skills and solutions.
Babies and toddlers – We help parents see hope that their child will be able to stay on track developmentally, and grow up with all the possibilities as their sighted peers. Early Intervention specialists lay the groundwork for future learning by helping children progress through normal developmental stages, foster their ability to function independently and awaken their desire to learn.
Children 6 – 13 - We believe every child should be able to fully participate in school, play with other children and see no limits to what they can become. Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) teach critical skills in socialization, independent living and communication as part of the nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum of Students with Visual Impairments.
Life Skills Camp— A six-week camp for kids 6 – 13 during the months of June and July designed to help build life skills, socialization and orientation and mobility skills through fun activities.
Teen Transition Program— When teens graduate from high school, we want them to be prepared for their next step. Designed for students ages 14 – high school graduation, this program equips teens with the skills and knowledge to be prepared for life after high school. The goal is to ensure students transition successfully into college, technical school, employment and/or living on their own.
